Fossil Trace Bunkers Are No Joke
A scenic Colorado gem that punishes wayward shots with some of the toughest bunkers around.
Some courses look easy on paper and humble you the moment you step onto the first tee. Fossil Trace Golf Club in Golden, Colorado is exactly that kind of place — gorgeous to look at, brutal to score on, and absolutely defined by its bunkers.
If you came expecting a relaxed walk in the foothills, the sand traps have other plans. They kicked my butt this round, plain and simple. But even after a beating, it's impossible not to love this course.

A Course Carved From History
Fossil Trace gets its name from the genuine 64-million-year-old dinosaur tracks and prehistoric fossils preserved on the property. Playing here feels like golfing through a geology exhibit, with dramatic rock formations framing several holes.
The layout weaves between former clay-mining cliffs and open foothills terrain, giving every hole its own character. One moment you're hitting into a wide mountain vista, the next you're threading a tee shot beneath towering sandstone walls.
Those Bunkers, Though
Let's talk about the real story of the day: the bunkers. They are deep, they are plentiful, and they are positioned exactly where your average miss tends to land. More than once I found sand when I thought I'd struck a perfectly good shot.
The faces are steep enough that getting out cleanly takes real commitment — half-hearted sand swings just won't escape. By the back nine I'd learned to aim away from trouble entirely, which is probably the lesson the course was trying to teach me all along.
The smart play at Fossil Trace isn't hitting it close — it's hitting it far away from the sand.

Worth Every Sandy Swing
Despite the bunker beatdown, this was a great day of golf. The challenge is the point — Fossil Trace rewards course management and patience over raw power, and that makes a good round here genuinely satisfying.
If you're sharpening your sand game on a home simulator before a real-world trip, this is exactly the kind of course that makes those reps worthwhile. Bring your bunker confidence and your camera.
